Bareilly(Nath Nagari): A City of Legacy, Craft, and Growth Located at 28.37°N latitude and 79.43°E longitude, Bareilly lies on the banks of the Ramganga River in northern Uttar Pradesh, approximately 252 km from Delhi and 250 km from Lucknow. With an elevation of 268 meters, the city enjoys a fertile alluvial landscape that supports both agriculture and industry. Founded in 1537 by Mukrand Rai, Bareilly rose to prominence during the Mughal era and later became a significant administrative and military post under British rule. Today, it is one of the major cities in Uttar Pradesh and part of the Counter-Magnet cities to Delhi, recognized for its balanced urban growth. Culturally, Known as "Nath Nagari", Bareilly is home to seven ancient Nath temples and a rich Sufi heritage, most notably the shrine of Imam Ahmed Raza Khan (Ala Hazrat). The city is also synonymous with traditional crafts—most notably the Jhumka, a decorative earring that has become a symbol of local identity, commemorated by a 200-kg metal sculpture at a prominent traffic intersection. Bareilly is one of India’s leading producers of Surma (natural kohl), with decades-old local businesses exporting across South Asia and the Middle East. It also plays a vital role in Uttar Pradesh’s sugarcane belt, with numerous Khandsari units producing unrefined sugar, a key product in the regional agro-economy. Economically, Bareilly is known for its Zari-Zardozi embroidery, bamboo furniture, and handicrafts, supporting thousands of artisans. It has a growing presence in retail, agro-processing, logistics, and small-scale manufacturing. The city is well connected via National Highways 30 and 530, Bareilly Junction railway station, and Bareilly Airport, linking it to major cities across India. As it continues to modernize, Bareilly remains deeply rooted in its heritage—offering a unique blend of tradition, trade, and transformation.
